Heatstroke

As the days are getting warmer knowledge about heatstroke prevention is very important.

Dogs and cats cannot regulate their body temperature as easily as humans so they are more vulnerable to heat stroke.  Heatstroke generally happens when pets are left in a hot car or left outside for too long on a hot/humid day.

It is important to know the common signs of heatstroke which include:  excessive panting, bright red tongue, gastrointestinal upset (vomiting), lack of coordination and sometimes seizures.  Pets showing these signs should be cooled down as soon as possible by offering water and placing a cool towel over their head.  Avoid cold water immersion because that may cause hypothermia and chock.  Seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.

Heatstroke can be avoided by providing adequate ventilation and shelter.  Providing access to fresh water at all times is a vital necessity.  Use common sense by restricting excessive running and exercise on a hot day to help prevent overheating.

Heatstroke is a completely preventable and possibly fatal condition.  If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for them!
