What should I do with Baby Bunnies?

People often find a nest of baby bunnies and assume they are abandoned. That is usually not the case! Most people often try to “rehabilitate” the baby bunnies but end up doing more harm than good. The reality is fewer than 10% of orphaned bunnies survive a week. The best thing to do if you find a nest of baby bunnies is to put them right back where you found them. The mom will only come back and find them at night. If you notice obvious trauma to the bunny the best thing to do is call a local wildlife center.

Bunnies build their nests in plain view, sometimes being in the middle of a lawn or in brush piles and tall grass. If you find the nest to have been disturbed, do all you can to restore and protect it.  Do not bring it inside. If you have a pet that is disturbing the nest, place a plastic laundry basket on top of it and cut a hole on the side so that the mother can go in and out of the nest. Bunnies do not voluntarily leave the nest until they are about 4-5 weeks old.

Rabbit mothers only feed their babies approximately 4-5 minutes a day. She will be in the nest early in the morning and later in the evening so if you find a nest of bunnies do not disturb them! This is normal behavior for bunnies and the mother will return to the when you are not around.
