Storm Anxiety

It is not uncommon for pet parents to see their beloved pet suffer from storm anxiety. There is no way to know exactly the cause. Storm anxiety can start out with a little whining and over time can turn into a full blown panic. It is also not uncommon for pets to also fear fireworks, gunshots, or any other loud noises. It is best to know the signs early on so you can prevent a potentially dangerous panic attack.

The signs can be quite obvious such as pacing, whining, some dogs will either seek attention or hide out, and some can even get destructive.  Other signs can include accidents, yawning, whale eye (when dogs show the whites of their eyes), and licking their lips.  These signs may be subtle at first but can get worse over time.

There are many things you can do to ease your pets fear. Providing a safe, quiet environment may help your pet feel more secure. Place them in a cozy quiet room in your home with a comfy bed to make them feel safer. You can also try a crate with a sheet over the top. Some dogs also benefit from a tight sweater or “Thundershirt”. If your dog’s anxiety is severe, seek veterinary assistance. There are many behavioral medications that can help.
