Does your pet have a food allergy?

10% of allergies in pets are food allergies. It can affect both dogs and cats and can occur at any age ranging from 5 months to 12 years. Most cases of food allergies are caused by the protein in the food such as beef, chicken, lamb, etc.

Food allergies generally cause the pet have very itchy and irritated skin usually on the face, ears, forelimbs and armpits sometimes resulting in hair loss. Reoccurring ear infections are very common with food allergies as well. You may also notice excessive licking of the paws. With food intolerance you will notice gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, diarrhea or excessive gas.

Diagnosing a food allergy is not straightforward. It is important to rule out any other medical conditions that can cause similar symptoms first. Once all other conditions are ruled out it is time to start a food trial.

Food trials consist of feeding your pet a novel protein that they have never been exposed to before. Examples would be rabbit or venison. Food trials last at least 12 weeks.  You can not feed your pet anything but the special food or give your pets any treats, flavored medications, rawhides, flavored toothpastes, etc.

Food allergies can be a frustrating thing to deal with, but with a little patience and consistency your pet will be good as new in no time!
