Obesity

Canine obesity is a common disease which is defined by excess body fat. Dogs on a poor diet with lack exercise are the most at risk of becoming obese.  Even if your dog is only moderately overweight it can cause many health problems!  Excess fat can affect the bones, joints and digestive organs and can greatly reduce your pets’ lifespan.  It is important to get your dog’s weight under control sooner rather than later.

Diagnosing obesity in dogs is done by measuring their weight or by scoring their body condition. You can do this by palpating the ribs. You want to be able to easily feel your dog’s ribs with a small layer of fat between the ribs and the skin.  If it is difficult to palpate the ribs, most likely your dog is overweight.

Treating the problem is all about consistency and dedication.  Talk to your veterinarian about food recommendations.  If your dog is a treat lover, try giving green beans instead of treats that are high in fat. Green beans are a great source of fiber so they will feel fuller longer. Exercising is also very important.  Take your dog on more walks or play some fetch!  It’s a great way to exercise and bond with them.   Keeping their weight under control will help them feel their best!
