Halloween Dangers for Pets

Halloween is a fun holiday for everybody, but there are many potential hazards your pet may face that you might not be aware of! From costumes to candy and everything in between.

Here are some of the dangers and tips to help avoid them:

  1. Candy

A lot of dogs (and some cats) can’t resist the sugary treats either!  Unfortunately, candy can cause them to be very sick! Eating enough of it, candy can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and even kidney and organ failure.

  1. Chocolate

Chocolate is more poisonous to our pets than any other candy.  It contains methylxanthines, chemicals similar to caffeine.  Those chemicals can make your pet very sick very quickly.  The darker the chocolate, the more poisonous it is.  Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, agitation, increased thirst and elevated heartrate.  In severe cases it may cause seizures.

  1. Candy Wrappers

Most pets don’t take the time to get the candy out of the wrappers before digging in! Many times those wrappers can cause bowel obstruction which require surgical intervention.  Symptoms of a bowl obstruction include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, not defecating or straining to defecate.

  1. Raisins

Many neighbors prefer to hand out raisins as an alternative to candy for a healthier snack.  Raisins are extremely toxic to pets!  Any amount ingested can cause major health problems such as vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain and kidney failure.

To avoid these potential dangers, keep all candy and food on a high surface or in a cabinet where your pet can not reach.  Hope you all have a safe and happy Halloween!
