The Importance of Hisotry

Being a veterinarian is in some ways very similar to being a pediatrician.  Our patients cannot always tell us what is wrong.  Many times we have to rely on the pet parents for a complete detailed history to make a diagnosis.  There are many questions of vital importance and we may ask them more than once to make sure the answer is correct.

Time frames can be very important.  If you pet ate a toxin 5 minutes ago, 35 minutes ago, 3 hours ago; will determine what treatment the pet will receive.   If your pet has been coughing for 1 day, 3 days, 2 weeks; gives us clues as to different disease that might be at play.  The same is true when pets are limping.   Limping can be several things if it started this morning, but a lameness noted for 3 weeks or 3 months could indicate different underlying problems.

Honesty is always the best policy.  If you have been giving medications at home telling you veterinarian could save your pet from harmful drug interactions or provide further information to help explain your pet’s condition.  Veterinarians are not here to judge; we just need all the information possible to help your family’s pet feel better.  Chances are you will not shock us if you tell us your dog ate your homework or a special brownie.  We just need to know who, what, why, and when.

Veterinarians need both the patient’s history from the Pet Parents and a complete physical examination to make a correct diagnosis.  Veterinarians are scientists looking for small little clues to explain your pet’s ailments and to make sure the patient is healthy.  Sometimes something the Pet Parent may think is insignificant could greatly help form a proper diagnosis; which will lead to precise treatment and faster healing.  It takes a village to raise a child and it take a team to help your pets.
