National Pet Dental Health Month!

Did you know periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition in dogs and cats and is completely preventable?  Your pets’ teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian.  Unhealthy teeth and gums can lead to other health problems with your pet including liver, kidney and heart muscle changes.

Veterinary dentistry includes the cleaning, repair or extraction of your pets’ teeth.  These procedures are performed by your veterinarian or a board certified veterinary dentist. Usually by the age of three, your pet may already show signs of early dental disease.  It is best to visit your veterinarian if your pet has bad breath, abnormal drooling or seems painful when they eat, or if your pet has any bleeding or swelling in or around their mouth.

There are many causes of dental problems in dogs and cats such as broken teeth, oral tumors, abscesses, palate defects and many more.  Early detection is critical to prevent further damage to the teeth and gums.  Treatment for periodontal disease involves a thorough dental cleaning which can be performed by your veterinarian.  Based on your pets’ health and the severity of your pets’ periodontal disease, your veterinarian can provide you with options to consider.

Anesthesia makes it possible for your veterinarian to perform the dental cleaning.  It reduces the stress of your pet and provides safety for both your pet and the veterinary staff. Although anesthesia has its risks, it is safer now than ever and your pet can go home the same day of the procedure.

To keep your pets’ teeth and gums healthier in between dental cleanings, simply brushing regularly is the most effective way.  Brushing their teeth every day is best, but not always realistic. Brushing a couple of times a week can still be very effective!
