AAHA stands for the American Animal Hospital Association. Their mission over the last 80 years has been to provide veterinary professionals with resources to effectively manage their businesses and deliver the best in companion animal care. AAHA’s leaders and other veterinary experts have developed specific written standards for companion animal practices. The standards are updated regularly to reflect current industry standards and include recent developments in veterinary medicine.
The written standards to be followed encompass the entire veterinary practice. They also accentuate the importance of teamwork for the practice to function properly. The Quality of Care guidelines include anesthesia, contagious disease, dentistry, emergency and critical care, pain management, patient care and surgery. The Management guidelines include client service, continuing education, human resources, leadership, referral standards and safety. There are Medial Record standards as well as Facility Standards that include examination facilities, housekeeping and maintenance. There are also standards for diagnostic imaging, laboratory and pharmacy.
