Thanksgiving Day Hazards for Pets

Thanksgiving is a special holiday that brings together family and friends, but it can also bring some hazards for your pets! Holiday food should be kept out of your pets reach.  It is best not to feed your pet any table scraps no matter how much they beg! Here are a few foods that can be harmful to them:

Turkey and Turkey Skin: Feeding your pet even a small amount of turkey or turkey skin can cause serious issues with your pet’s digestive system, even causing painful pancreatitis. If you want to give your pet something special for thanksgiving, buy or make a special treat just for them.

Deserts: Chocolate can be very harmful for pets. It contains an ingredient called xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is often used in gum and sugar free baked goods that can be deadly to dogs and cats.

Yeast dough: Yeast dough can cause painful gas and can potentially cause bloating.

Decorative plants: Many people often forget that some holiday plants can be toxic to dogs and cats. Plants such as amaryllis, Baby’s Breath, Sweet William, some ferns, hydrangeas and more.

Trash: Be sure to take your trash out right away! Many pets are tempted to get into the trash after a feast. Turkey bones and carcasses can cause potential obstruction and make your pet very sick.

These are just a few things to think about while celebrating the holidays! If you have any questions it’s always best to call your Veterinarian!
