Rabies

Rabies.  One of the most deadly zoonotic diseases still found in more than 150 countries and territories around the world.  It is a vaccine preventable virus that causes severe inflammation in the brain and spinal cord of mammals.   It is transmitted through contact with infected animals via a bites, saliva and/or scratches.  Most people relate rabies with wild animals like bats, raccoons, foxes, or skunks.  However, the more imminent threat lies with our furry friends.

In 2015, nearly 420 domestic animals within the U.S. tested positive for the rabies virus.   Of that number, cats accounted for more than half of those cases.  Dogs, on the other hand, are the main contributing source (up to 99%) of all rabies transmission to humans.  What is even more alarming is that 40% of those bitten are under 15 years of age.  Once contracted, there is no cure and death will soon follow.

These are only a few reasons why it is so important to keep your pets vaccinated against rabies.  But, you say, “My dog/cat never goes outside!” Even if they never go outside, rabid animals can get in.  Bats are notorious for getting into attics and raccoons get into crawl spaces.  These events then put your pets at risk for coming into contact with an infected animal.  Not only is it a deadly consequence for your pet, but it can be a deadly consequence for you.

So, what can you do to help prevent the spread of rabies?  Do not leave animal feed or water for pets outside.  You may think that you are doing a good thing, however, you are encouraging potential infected animals to come visit your house.   Keeping your garbage securely covered will also help.  Use caution around unfamiliar animals and report suspicious acting strays to authorities.  And last but not least, make sure all your dogs and cats are current on their rabies vaccinations, regardless if they go outside or not.

Please, take the time to talk to your veterinarian about vaccinating your dog or cat against rabies.  Not only for their health, but for your health, too.
